Every new year, without fail, the wedding media goes crazy about wedding trends. In 2024 the UK’s top wedding planner Mark Niemierko won the entire trends conversation with an instagram story that said “2024 wedding trends: whatever the fuck my couples want“. And you know what? That’s the vibe weddings need! Following trends is fine… but a wedding that honestly reflects you is worth its weight in gold and diamonds.

I had a lovely chat with Mark towards the end of 2023. We talked about wedding trends and what weddings might look like in 2024. Mark turned the whole trend thing beautifully on its head with a new perspective: that wedding style is more important than any trend.

It’s interesting to see wedding blogs suggesting that [insert any(!) year here] will be a year of maximalism and going all out with wedding decor. Of course that comes with a hefty price tag – and there’s no way couples on a budget can incorporate the “have everything” trend into their day. I don’t agree with pushing the maximalist trend at all! Styling a stunning wedding is possible on any budget. The key is authenticity and being true to yourselves.

Mark explained that for him, a minimal and chic wedding look can be fresh and exciting. Finding quality in decor and style is more important than any trend. The epitome of luxury is that you don’t shout about it! And I loved hearing Mark say there’s no point in choosing a beautiful wedding venue or reception space if you’re just going to vomit flowers all over it.

I couldn’t agree more.

To style a wedding that’s minimal, elegant and chic, look to 90s Calvin Klein for inspiration. The look was clean, direct, beautiful and powerful: personality shone from every billboard and catwalk show. Mark says that vibe translates perfectly to weddings: keep tablescapes minimal and elegant. Choose clean lines and simple statement pieces for your decor. And for your outfits… be authentically, proudly and beautifully YOU. (Whether that means clean lines and sleek tailoring or sparkling like a glitter ball – shine in the way you know and love best!)

Interestingly for a luxury wedding planner, Mark told me he follows interior design rather than wedding influencers on social media, and that’s where inspiration can come in spades. Trending colour palettes include beige, stone and taupe – and delicious monochrome which has timeless sophistication.

Another colour which could see its way into 2024 weddings is purple, inspired by royal celebrations and bringing luxury and a sense of opulence. Some of my favourite flowers are purple: think hellebores and anemones in winter, clematis and sweet peas for summer.

Styling your day doesn’t have to cost more than you can afford. I’d like to hear that a key wedding trend for ANY year would be honesty with budgeting. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to see the wedding industry encourage couples to avoid borrowing and overspending – and to create celebrations which are pure joy without a cloud of debt hanging over the horizon?

The 1990s Calvin Klein aesthetic lends itself to understated venues and clean spaces. If you’re still looking for a wedding venue, a space that’s unfussy but graceful, classic and no-frills is perfect. In the countryside, a blank-canvas venue or even an outdoor ceremony space would be perfect. Alongside minimal styling there’ll be more elements from nature creeping into 2024 wedding decor. Think nordic wood and wishbone chairs, and textures of rattan and stone. And when it comes to greenery, embrace all the foliage and go big!
